Looking to add Financial Literacy to your school’s curriculum?
Select Advisors can guide you in building out a program and staffing it with one of the thousands of financial firms and teams we have worked with since 2014!
The Select Advisors Institute is dedicated to empowering individuals with financial literacy through tailored programs, curriculum, and courses offered at colleges, universities, and high schools. Leveraging our extensive network of thousands of advisors, we are committed to collaborating with educational institutions to develop comprehensive financial literacy programs that equip students with essential knowledge and skills to navigate personal finance successfully. Understanding how money works not only benefits individuals but also puts them in a stronger position to drive positive change in society. According to a study featured by Fortune in 2016, nearly two-thirds of Americans struggled to pass a basic financial literacy test, highlighting the pressing need for improved financial education initiatives.
At the core of our efforts lies a shared mission to transform the financial literacy landscape and empower individuals to make informed financial decisions. Our flagship program, the Financial Literacy Curriculum, draws on insights from previous academic and co-curricular initiatives, supplemented by community feedback, to deliver a holistic learning experience. Participants in this program will gain a fundamental understanding of personal finance, enabling them to make sound financial choices during their academic journey and beyond.
The Financial Literacy Curriculum comprises four professionally developed workshops, each with faculty-approved curriculum, as well as supplemental reading materials and ad hoc special sessions to enhance learning outcomes. Through our partnership with the Laspa Center for Leadership and Career Planning & Resources, students and community members have access to a range of resources and networking opportunities to support their financial education journey. All sessions are facilitated by members of the Scripps College community and are open to all currently enrolled students and community members of The Claremont Colleges.
Here's a glimpse into the core modules of the Financial Literacy Curriculum:
Basic Budgeting: The inaugural workshop focuses on creating a monthly budget, emphasizing the importance of saving, investing, and emergency planning, setting financial goals, and developing a conscious spending plan.
Paychecks and Taxes: Participants will learn to estimate net income from gross salary, understand the significance of employment benefits, and gain insights into federal income taxes.
Banking, Credit, and Loans: Delving into the fundamentals of bank accounts, credit, and loans, this workshop educates participants on credit history, credit cards, interest rates, and various forms of loans and repayment options.
Investments: The final workshop explores how personal values impact long-term investments, covering retirement options, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and associated tax implications.
In addition to the core modules, the Financial Literacy Curriculum offers special sessions, such as Salary Negotiation, where participants learn essential negotiation skills, conduct salary research, and secure equitable positions in the workforce. Facilitated by experts trained in the Start Smart curriculum, this workshop empowers women and gender nonconforming individuals to advocate for fair compensation and benefits, fostering a culture of inclusivity and empowerment in professional settings.
Through the Select Advisors Institute's Financial Literacy Program, we aim to bridge the gap in financial education and equip individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed financial decisions, ultimately fostering financial independence and security for our communities.
